Sundance Film Festival

Published by admin under Travel Deals

The Sundance Film Festival is a film festival that takes place annually in the state of Utah, in the United States. It is the largest independent cinema festival in the U.S. Held in January in Park City, Salt Lake City, and Ogden, Utah, as well as the Sundance Resort, the festival is the premier showcase for new work from American and international independent filmmakers. The festival comprises competitive sections for American and international dramatic and documentary films, and a group of non-competitive showcase sections, including the Sundance Online Film Festival.

Sundance began in Salt Lake City in 1978 as the Utah/US Film Festival in an effort to attract more filmmakers to Utah. Founded by Sterling Van Wagenen and John Earle with Chairperson Robert Redford, the goal of the festival was to showcase what the potential of independent film could be. At the time, the main focus of the event was to present a series of retrospective films and filmmaker panel discussions; however it also included a small program of films made outside the Hollywood system, commonly known as independent films.

The festival has changed over the decades from a low-profile venue for small-budget, independent creators from outside the Hollywood system to a media extravaganza for Hollywood celebrity actors, directors from studios that are subsidiaries of the major studios, paparazzi, and luxury-goods company sponsors giving gifts to the attendees.

Victory Day Russia

Published by admin under Tourist Attraction, Travel Deals

Victory Day in Russia, a national holiday this remembers the defeat of Nazi Germany in World War II and honors 20 million Soviets who died in the war.

The fighting of World War II in Europe ended on May 2nd, 1945. The surrender of German troops was signed on May 4th and 5th but officially the war ended at midnight on May 8th 1945. To remember this important event, the Russians created a national holiday called Victory Day which is celebrated on May 9th in Russia.

When Nazi Germany attacked Russia or the Soviet Union, as it was known then, the Russian army pushed the Germans all the way back to Berlin which helped to defeat Hitler’s forces.

The main reason for the celebration of Victory Day was to remember the people who died in the war. On that day, flowers are laid on their graves and veterans that are still alive go out on the streets wearing their medals and orders. There are few of them left now days and the number is getting smaller every year.

Russia mainly fought a war to defend itself, which is called a “patriotic war”. That is what most Russians call WWII. In Russia almost all the familiVictory Dayes have at least one person who took part in the war. The other old citizens who did not fight during the war had to work in factories to make guns and preparations, which wasn’t easier than fighting. They too are honored on Victory Day.

Bonn Chaul Chhnam Khmer

Published by admin under Tourist Attraction, Travel Deals

As the harvest ends, Cambodia prepares for the New Year with three days of purification ceremonies, temple offerings, traditional games and a royal procession.

In houses across the country, people make offerings to the thousands of devodas (gods and goddesses of the sky) who are believed to make their pilgrimage to mythical Mount Meru at this time. Every home is spring-cleaned before an altar is constructed and decorated. Offerings are also made at local temples. The main entrances to temples are decorated with garlands of coconut leaves and flowers while, in the courtyards, monks bathe in perfumed water. The ceremony of Poon Phmon calls for people to build sandcastles in pagoda grounds, generally in perfumed water.

On the last day of Chaul Chhnam, known as Long Sak, the royal family calls upon the king in Phnom Penh to swear allegiance and wish him good health. Versions of this royal ceremony are performed in Cambodian families. Long Sak continues with entertainment including boxing, elephant and horse races and a royal procession.

In the countryside, traditional Khmer games such as Angkunh, Chaol Chhoung, Leak Kansaeng and tug-of-war are played - particularly at New Year, when villages fill with family gatherings. Angkunh is a bowls-like game played by two teams with a large nut (angkunh). Chaol Chhoung is similar to tennis except the ball is wrapped in a hankie and thrown, while Leak Kanseng is a Khmer version of “blind man’s buff”. The reward for the victors in most of these games seems to be the “friendly” rapping of the losers’ knees and elbows with solid objects - a source of great amusement!

This Festival is held in April 2009 at Cambodia.

Vienna Philharmonic´s New Year’s Day Concert

When: 1 Jan 2009 (annual)

Where: Musikverein

Opening Hours: 11.15am

One of the world’s most famous concerts, the Vienna Philharmonic’s New Year’s Day Concert in the Musikverein’s fabulous Golden Hall greets the New Year with dance music of the Strauss dynasty.

The History of the Vienna Philharmonic´s New Year’s Concert

The Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra’s New Year’s Concert is by far the most popular of this orchestra’s functions, but also Austria’s most noteworthy cultural export. Throughout the world the Vienna Philharmonic’s New Year’s Concert is televised worldwide and is without doubt the most widely seen and heard of all regular musical presentations performed in the equally famous Musikvervein Concert Hall.

Herbert von Karajan conducted in 1987 (an experience which he reported was completely rejuvenative for his music-making), since when the baton has changed hands annually between a small number of top maestros: Abbado, Kleiber, Maazel, Mehta, Muti, Harnoncourt (the first Viennese conductor since 1980 to take the baton, in 2001 and again in 2003), Ozawa, Jansons and - in 2008 - the sprightly octogenarian, French conductor Georges Pretre making his New Year Concert debut.

Special Attractions

In 2009 another debutant, Daniel Barenboim, guides the Philharmonic through favourite Strauss dances, as well as their contemporaries, ending with the traditional encores - the Blue Danube waltz and Johann Strauss the Elder’s Radetzky march.
