Ramadan

Published by admin under Tourist Attraction

The ninth month of the Muslim lunar calendar is devoted to fasting and is observed by Muslims throughout the world as one of the “five pillars” of the religion.

The other four are the declaration of faith, prayer, charity (Zakat), and the Hajj, or pilgrimage to Makkah.

For an entire lunar month of 30 days, devout Muslims are forbidden to eat or drink between sunrise and sunset. The prohibition also extends to other pleasurable consumptions, like cigarettes, and activities such as sex.

The beginning of the observance is calculated by the lunar calendar, which is shorter than the Western Gregorian calendar. Every year Ramadan slides a couple of weeks back through the calendar, until it has covered the entire year.

Bhutan Paro Tsechu

Published by admin under Tourist Attraction

Tsechus are very popular in Bhutan. It marks the day of birth of the most revered saint, Guru Padmasambhava or the lotus born. All the dzongs in the twenty districts have a few days in their calendar dedicated for the celebration of this auspicious occasion.

They also watch masked dances and colourful allegorical dramas performed in the atmospheric courtyard of the Paro Dzong (temple-fortress). Bhutan is a deeply religious country and Buddhism was first introduced there in around AD800 by the revered Guru Padmasambhava, “he who was born of a lotus flower”, and it is in his honour that the festival is held.

The festival consists of three parts: the “Pre-festival” on the first day, ceremonies inside the Paro Dzong on the second day, and the main festivities on the festival ground on the remaining three days. For the devout, the highlight undoubtedly occurs on the final day when a huge religious picture (thongdrel) is unfurled at dawn. To witness this event is to gain great merit.

Both monks and lay people perform in the festival dances and dramas as an act of meditation, seeking to personify the deity that they portray. Masked and dressed in elaborate costumes of silk brocade, dancers demonstrate the triumph of good over evil and the power of compassion to the haunting sounds of trumpets, cymbals and flutes. Dances are interspersed with folksongs and clowning, while copious amounts of butter tea and potent barley alcohol are consumed.

The dances, masks and costumes of Bhutan’s festivals have survived unchanged for over 1000 years. Each dance is said to be an exact re-enactment of visions seen by Bhutan’s great Buddhist saints, and thus any changes would be sacrilegious. Today this beautiful and sacred festival remains a wonderful manifestation of a religious faith that is still a crucial part of Bhutanese daily life.

This Festival is held in Mar 2009 at Paro, Bhutan.

Bolivia Devil’s Carnival (La Diablada)

Published by admin under Tourist Attraction

The tradition of devil dancers derives from a peculiar kind of devil worship. Oruro is a mining town and the locals, spending so much time underground, decided to adopt a god of the underworld. Christian tradition dictates that this must be the devil and the Oruro faithful thus adopted Satan, or Supay, as their god. They would perform sacrifices to the devil on a regular basis to ensure their safety in the mines and the devil dancing in the carnival derives from their belief in Satan as their protector underground.

For three days in spring, Oruro goes into carnival mode. One of the main highlights is the Diablada, or devil dance.

Among the 30 or so carnival groups, there are thousands of people, and a group can consist of up to 300 people. The variety of costumes is phenomenal - including witch doctors, llama herders, Amazonian Indians sporting dazzling feathered head-dresses and morenos (black slaves). The costumes are beyond your wildest imagination: light bulbs replace eyes, mirrors replace teeth. The combination of colour, outlandish masks and costumes, music, dance and fireworks is bound to leave you wide-eyed.

These days, the procession tends to focus more on the patron saint of mining, the Virgen del Sovacón and Pachamama (Mother Earth) than the devil, but devil dances are still an important part of the proceedings. Supay and his wife Supay China are closely followed by a multitude of he-devils and she-devils. Next come a series of animal characters, common to the area during the Middle Ages, including snarling bears, graceful condors and pumas.

The carnival draws to an end on the Monday, known otherwise as the Día del Agua. Revellers gather in the town square for a thunderous exchange of water bombs. Gringos beware!

All things come to an end with the ceremonies of Ch’alla. Liquid, both alcoholic and non-alcoholic, is ceremoniously poured onto the ground, back to Mother Nature where it came from. That is, if you don’t mind wasting your drink!

This Carnival is held in Feb 2009 at Oruro in Bolivia.
