The whole of Belize celebrates Carnival, but nowhere throbs quite like San Pedro on Ambergris Caye.

On the opening day, a parade and cultural displays kick off the celebrations. The carnival is a time for grown-ups to behave like kids and indulge in a series of practical jokes, and everyone attempts to cover each other in a cocktail of lipstick, paint and colored powder. The final day is also the official day and the aim of the game is to “paint” as many people as possible - a custom rooted in the universal carnival tradition of disguise and role transformations. Stay indoors if you don’t want to end up all the colors of the rainbow, as paint “revenge” soon gets everyone around covered.

During the event the centre of the town throngs with street dancers known as comparsas. Prizes are handed out to the best - and invariably the male comparsa are the victors. This may be testament to their dance talents, but amusement value is also high on the list, as they are all local dignitaries dressed up in drag.

The Aalst Carnival is no less spectacular or surprising for it. A three-day extravaganza, it allows inhabitants and tourists alike to vent the frustrations pent up during the long winter months in a burst of colour and music.

The carnival begins with a procession, in which the locals present their own interpretation of the previous year’s events. Expect large-scale caricatures and plenty of good old slapstick comedy, even if some of the more local intrigue may be slightly obscure! The procession is repeated on the second day, culminating this time in a frenzy of onion throwing. Don’t worry about tears and evil smells: the real thing was replaced years ago by confectionery imitating the shape of the pungent bulb. The flying onions carry numbers, which could enable a lucky winner to walk home with the prized “golden onion” after the concluding lottery.

The excitement isn’t over yet: the afternoon brings further insanity with the arrival of the Gilles d’Aalst. Like their peers in Binche, these comedy figures are swathed in padded straw costumes, but they are unique in that they (literally) sweep the audience off their feet during the entertaining danse du balai, or broom dance, which carries on until evening.

Audience participation continues on the following day as the Voil Jeannetten hit the town in their thousands. Dressing up - or rather cross-dressing - is the name of the game here as men don drag and women wear beards to trawl through the streets. The transvestites take it upon themselves to copiously insult onlookers, giving them a hefty dose of Flemish slang to get everyone into the spirit of things. Suitably revved up, the crowd then parties until nightfall.

The Copa Telmex tennis tournament takes place each year on the outdoor clay courts of the Buenos Aires Lawn Tennis Club. The players compete for a purse of US$400,000. David Nalbandian is last year’s champion.

The ATP Buenos Aires is an annual tennis event for male tennis players held in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The tournament is an International Series tennis event on the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) tour and it is played on outdoor clay courts at the 5,500 capacity Buenos Aires Lawn Tennis Club, in the Palermo neighborhood. Usually held in February, it includes both a men’s singles and a men’s doubles tournament.
