The Dakar Rally pits over 400 drivers against each other in a gruelling long-distance race. In 2009, the rally takes place in South America for the first time, covering a 9000km loop between Buenos Aires, Argentina and Valparaíso, Chile.

Competitors from around the world drive a mixture of buggies, 4×4 vehicles, motorbikes and quad-bikes, but only a quarter of participants can expect to finish. The lucky few cover landscapes ranging from mountains to desert and farmland and contrasting extremes of heat and cold.

The event began in 1977 and creates more and more press attention, entrants and excitement every year.

Nassau’s Bay Street lights up each year for Junkanoo - an adrenalin rush of colours, costumes and floats driven by the beat of the goatskin drum.

This is a festival unique for its raw Afro-Caribbean flavour. Spectators line Bay Street from about 2am until 8am. A mounting clamour of bells, whistles and goombay drums throbs forward to the rhythm of the music until dawn streaks across the sky, revealing revellers in extraordinary costumes.

Special Attraction

Secret Junkanoo “shacks” all over the island are the venues for the creation of these costumes, made of thousands of tiny pieces of coloured paper. Competition to win is always fierce. The groups who compete in the Junkanoo have crazy names such as the Vikings, the Music Makers and the Z-Bandits. The winners are announced on the local radio and television stations and there is a cash prize for the winning group.

Throughout the world the Vienna Philharmonic’s New Year’s Concert is televised worldwide and is without doubt the most widely seen and heard of all regular musical presentations performed in the equally famous Musikvervein Concert Hall.

Herbert von Karajan conducted in 1987 (an experience which he reported was completely rejuvenative for his music-making), since when the baton has changed hands annually between a small number of top maestros: Abbado, Kleiber, Maazel, Mehta, Muti, Harnoncourt (the first Viennese conductor since 1980 to take the baton, in 2001 and again in 2003), Ozawa, Jansons and - in 2008 - the sprightly octogenarian, French conductor Georges Pretre making his New Year Concert debut.

In 2009 another debutant, Daniel Barenboim, guides the Philharmonic through favourite Strauss dances, as well as their contemporaries, ending with the traditional encores - the Blue Danube waltz and Johann Strauss the Elder’s Radetzky march.

France’s premier ice-racing series stages its second race of the season at Pas de la Casa, one of Andorra’s most modern resorts. It is the most famous trophy in the France ‘Andorra’. It is Held at Pas de la casa Andorra France on December 13, 2008 - December 14, 2008.

A glamorous and spectacular event, the Andros Trophy has been running since 1990. Attracting big name drivers and manufacturers, it consists of seven races in mountain resorts, with a grand finale pitting the leaders against each other.

The ice track on which the race is run is prepared weeks in advance, being ritually sprayed with water to ensure an even and stable coating of ice. However, the often capricious weather conditions make for exciting viewing when ice melts or forms.

The race itself is fought in two categories, Elite and Promotion, each of which are split into two heats. Driver and co-pilot teams are divided into two groups for both heats and finals, guaranteeing more races for onlookers. The winning team is the one with the most points after the finals.
